NYCFringe Becomes More Mainstream
By Simi Horowitz
Backstage
"....Similarly, in the category of performance, the Fringe adjudicators
have witnessed an evolution. "It's not simply that the acting is
on a higher
level, although we believe it is," says Holy. "But more interesting,
the
actors are all playing characters that are very removed from themselves.
Even in the autobiographical solo shows -- and we're seeing fewer of
those -- the actors are playing characters."
One of the "performers" tapped for an award was Dixie Longate,
the real-life top Tupperware
saleswoman, in "Dixie's Tupperware Party."
"It's a hilarious piece, as Dixie shows the various and unexpected
[naughty] uses for Tupperware," says Holy. "The piece also
works as a social
commentary...."
